This Argentinian film, The Secret in Their Eyes, a crime thriller took the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009.To me, this movie is about the choices people make in their lives. Benjamin Espisito seems to struggle with events that happened in his past, 25 years ago, a crime he came to investigate with his then boss, Judge Irene. He starts to write about these events and reconnects with Irene, ostensibly to seek her advice, but ultimately to find some closure. A complicating factor is that at that time, and it seems 25 years later, he was/is in love with her.
Through a series of flashbacks, we see that Benjamin felt he made the best choice he could by not trying to start anything with Irene 25 years ago, she was engaged at the time. Although they both seemed to be in love with each other then, they were not able to fully act on this. It was complicated. At the end of the movie, we still see that life is complicated but in spite of this, they appear to be ready to start something this time, ready to move on with their lives.

Benjamin E had to overcome his fear (admitting he was in love with an 'untouchable' woman) before he could let go and follow his heart. The story was built around the Morales case, the love story remains out there for your imagination.....

ReplyDeleteBenjamin realizes that there are times to let go and times to hold on...he thought he was searching for closure, trying to let go of his love for Irene, but finally realizes that what he really needed to let go of was his fear...what a moving journey from the bondage of fear to the freedom of love!
The secret in their eyes is a story about an inspector Benjamin E struggling with the Morales case that has been haunting him for the past 25. In order to overcome this struggle he decides to write a novel to capture his thoughts and solve the mystery.
ReplyDeleteWoven into the story is a story about love and revenge by Pablo the husband of his murdered wife Carla. The love for his Carla and revenge by capturing her killer after his release by the bureaucratic system and keeping him behind bars for 25 years without speaking a word to him.
As Benjamin writes his novel he finally admits to his former boss Irene that he has been in love with her for the past 25 years. How this loves develops remains a mystery as well as the murder of Benjamin's collegue.
